The strike of the fault plane is defined as the azimuth of the line formed by the intersection of the horizontal plane and the fault plane. Strike is always measured in the northeast (NE) or northwest (NW) quadrants.
Definition of Dip:
The dip of the fault plane is measured in the plane perpendicular to the strike and is defined as the angle between the horizontal plane and the fault plane. 0° is horizontal, 90° is vertical. Since there are two possible dip directions for a given strike, the general direction of dip must be specified as one of the principal compass directions (N,E,S, or W).
